Grace Good: The Future of Circus
The circus industry has evolved drastically since its conception from something geared toward children to something more sophisticated. It’s gone from elephants balancing on balls in a large tent to what Grace calls an athletic art form. History generally credits Cirque Du Soleil with creating this new wave of circus, but it’s performers like Grace Good that have taken things into their own hands, putting their own spin on modern circus performance.
When asked how Grace has seen the circus industry evolve during her time as a performer, she explains that it's gotten more mainstream and subsequently bigger.
The internet and social media have made the industry much more accessible to a wider audience of both consumers and destined-to-be-circus performers. Grace predicts that 10 years from now, the industry will have boomed even more. There will be more sponsorship opportunities for circus artists, more tv shows, and more movies about the industry.
While Grace incorporates many traditional circus acts into her performances—aerial stunts, hula hooping, balancing tricks—she combines them in a way that has never been done before… and then adds fire.
Grace’s tendency to think outside the box and show viewers what they could never expect helps her maintain a competitive edge in the blossoming circus market. Grace also uses her social media channels to give behind-the-scenes looks at performances and allows the viewer to learn for themselves. This is one of the many ways she expresses her passion for helping grow the circus industry- even if it means bringing more competition into the mix!
When asked, “why circus when you could have been a dancer or a gymnast?”, Grace explains that she was initially drawn to the circus industry because it was so niche and underground at the time. Its obscurity intrigued her, making her want to be a part of its world. Plus, “I mean, who doesn’t want to watch someone fly around in the air hula hooping with a fiery dragon staff in their hand? It's fun, and it brings joy to people!”
